3 out of 5 stars Does okay... Still, there are better.   January 13, 2008

Having owned SnapStream products in the past, these do a fairly decent job, especially for those who wish to transfer their recorded TV shows to another device, such as a PSP, or a Pocket PC, this will convert your TV shows to those formats. However, the quality of HDTV just doesn't compare to Vista Home Premium's own Media Center. I would probably recommend that one go with Windows Vista Premium or Ultimate, or MCE 2005. There are other programs that can convert TV recordings better than Beyond TV to an MPEG format for other devices.

5 out of 5 stars BTV 4 +Asus My Cinema - P7131 TV / FM Card   May 3, 2007

Beyond TV 4 +Asus My Cinema - P7131 TV / FM Card = great poor-mans DVR!

I have an older puter sitting around with an 1.2ghz athlon proc. I dropped this cheap (only paid $24 bucks on eBay), PCI TV tuner card in it and installed Beyond TV 4. It works flawlessly! One thing to remember is to make sure that you set the recording format to an lower level that the system can handle. I use mpeg-2 setting at "fair". I noticed that if I used an higher setting like "mpeg-2 DVD quality" or "HDTV", my system would start getting laggy and skipping a lot. So you have to make sure that you set in to something your puter can handle. For me, "mpeg-2 fair" is pretty good, It is better than and VCR recording but not as good as DVD. And I am using an old system to boot.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond Media TV is Very Impressive!!   October 6, 2006

I have Tivo in the livingroom but I wanted something in the bedroom that would take the place of the flaky software that came with my ATI TV tuner card. Beyond Media and Beyond TV with the Firefly remote were just the ticket. I'm a PC Tech and I use my PC as a PC first and as a media center second, so this was the right way to go for me. I have lots of software, like Nero Recode and ATI's conversion software, to convert file types. That wasn't my main goal - I mean, I have 660 Gigs of hard drive space and don't need to compress my movies. I have all the codex installed to play almost any kind of video file and Beyond Media with the remote makes my little media center in the bedroom a great retreat. The added feature of CinemaNow and MovieLink right in the main interface was a huge plus. As an owner of Tivo, the Beyond TV interface was very familiar and worked just as well, with all the bells and whistles. I have been very satified. I think if you truly judge the software for what it is you will be very happy.

1 out of 5 stars Beyond TV 4 is garbage   April 12, 2006

Beyond TV 4 really stinks. I have Media Center 2005, and purchased and installed Beyond TV 4 to replace it. The primary goal was the stated ability to reencode TV programs to DivX, saving a great deal of disk space.

The problem is, the conversion doesn't work. It does one of two things: It either does not convert the files at all (you get 0kb files instead, like it my case) or it convert them to DivX, but they are unplayable in any version of DivX on any system (my friend's case, who also tried BeyondTV4).

The other problem is you cannot have more than 12 scheduled progranms. Below 12, it works fine. Enter more than 12, and it will not record shows (apparently randomly). When I tried to enter the 42 different shows my wife, kids, and I watch, BeyondTV froze. Consistently.

The thing also stutters during playback if you have antivirus active. Finally, for some reason, it gets the time wrong and starts and stops recording at the wrong time. It's not that the computer has the wrong time - it's time is correct. For some reason, Beyond TV gets it wrong.

I tried for two weeks to get hold of someone at SnapStream's tech support, but they would not answer their tech support line, and would not answer my emails. I also got no response to the request for a refund I made.

Search for reviews of this product, and you'll see my experience is FAR from unique. Avoid it at all costs! Go for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. It's stable and works, something Beyond TV 4 can't do.
