Product Description Garrison Keillor makes his long- awaited return to Lake Wobegon with this New York Times bestseller
The first new Lake Wobegon novel in seven years is a cause for celebration. And Pontoon is nothing less than a spectacular return to formreplete with a bowling ball-urn, a hot-air balloon, giant duck decoys, a flying Elvis, and, most importantly, Wallys pontoon boat. As the wedding of the decade approaches (accompanied by wheels of imported cheese and giant shrimp shish kebabs), the good-loving people of Lake Wobegon do what they do best: drive each other slightly crazy.

Plesant surprise December 8, 2008 I'm not a huge fan of Keillor's books--I enjoy Prairie Home Companion, but have found his past books pleasant but not particularly compelling or memorable. I don't know if it's because I'm older, but Pontoon's characters seem rounder, deeper, and more interesting. It's a bit darker than the previous works I've read, and maybe that's why I liked it better.
Staying trapped or floating away November 27, 2008 Barbara Peterson is trying to organize her mother's funeral, defeat alcoholism and escape from Lake Wobegon. Farce and tragedy mix. Lake Wobegon is a stultifying, puritanical, narrow-minded place, but there is nostalgia for its small-town middle-American virtues. Those who leave it, for California, New York or London, are liable to lose their solid Lake Wobegon characters and become flamboyant eccentrics or depressed losers. Barbara Peterson's central conflict is about leaving or staying. This conflict lurks in the background while Keillor manipulates his marionettes to form farcical events or arbitrary tragedies. I thoroughly enjoyed this entertaining book, although Keillor evidently has trouble constructing a plot, and resorts to bumping off characters or flipping them in and out of mental illness.
Classic Keillor November 3, 2008 Classic Keillor, with a bit of racy spice thrown in. Prudes need not apply. Funny, touching, with a wry, sad edge. Enthusiasts of Garrison's humor will enjoy this sweet book, but please do be prepared for a bit of wistful sad reality to creep in around the edges. Well worth reading.
truly one of the funniest "payoff's" October 6, 2008 Let me begin by saying although a long time fan of Prairie Home Companion, I had never read any of Keiller's books. From the get go it was fun...I could visualize the people. The plot leads up to really hysterical funeral that only Keiller could describe.
"Pontoon" is Five Star plus October 4, 2008 Garrison Keillor hits several spots with this book. It is loaded with wonderful human insights, the plight of uncommonly common folks, great humor, an inreasingly intricate plot, and one of the most side-splitting conclusions I have ever read. Don't peak at the last chapter (or Epilogue). Sit back and enjoy a master writer. It's over all too fast, but has a delightful conclusion to all the confllicts and challenges of Lake Wobegone. PEB
