1 out of 5 stars Total Crapware and False Advertising   December 31, 2008

Got this item with a 160 Gb SATA hard drive only to find out that even though it was advertising a SATA connection, the NAS enclosure uses IDE. It seems like Amazon changed their description as well since they also advertised that it used internal SATA drives.

After reading the new reviews, I'm not even bothering trying to set it up. This is going back to Amazon.

1 out of 5 stars Seriously, do not purchase this unit!   December 15, 2008

I bought this drive and thought I was getting a decent low cost deal. After all, $25 for a Gigabit NAS enclosure is definitely a bargain, but that also assumes the unit will work.

Problems were as follows:

* Advertising and Box stated this was an enclosure for SATA drives. It was not!

* Unit does not function as a USB drive in XP, Vista, or Linux.

* Drive "formatting" does not partition or write a legible filesystem to the disk drive (perhaps it has to be pre-partitioned and formatted in FAT (32?), which will prove interesting for anything over 32 GB in size.

* Cooling? There are no fans to speak of. BEWARE

* Upgrades? It has the ability to upgrade firmware, but there is no site from which to locate it. I wonder why?

* Static Configuration - I set the IP manually, which takes effect immediately. However, upon reboot, it returns to a DHCP configuration and resets the password to default.

* SMB? Nope, just old-school NetBIOS (RFC1001~1002) protocols. And yes, it authenticates with LANMAN...YUCK!

The only three good things I can say about this NAS device is that it is cheap, quiet, and the web interface is actually fast.

Save your hard earned money and buy something else. Seriously!

The network part works but is PAINFULLY slow. A text file with only the word "test" in it took 20sec to load.

The usb connectivity never worked for me on a Windows XP machine, or a linux machine, or Windows 2000 machine.

JUNK
